TraditionDvapara Yuga (Harivamsa, Mahabharata)
Dwarka, Krishna's western city
Dwarka, Gujarat

Krishna's capital on the Saurashtra coast, which the Mahabharata says the sea swallowed after his death.
Dwarka closes the Krishna cycle: the city he founded on the coast after leaving Mathura, and the city the sea took back once the Yadavas had destroyed one another.
S. R. Rao, surveying the seabed from 1983, dated submerged walls to the second millennium BCE and identified them with Krishna's city. Later work by the National Institute of Oceanography places the stone anchors and structures in the historical and medieval periods, and excavation in the town in 1963 found occupation from about the 2nd century BCE. The tradition is older than anything securely dated there.
