Aurangzeb takes Golconda
Golconda Fort, Hyderabad, Telangana

After an eight-month siege the last Deccan sultanate falls to Aurangzeb, carrying the empire close to its greatest extent.
Bijapur fell in 1686 and Golconda in 1687. The fort held from early in the year until September, when a gate was opened from within; Abul Hasan Qutb Shah ended his days a prisoner at Daulatabad.
The outline on the map, c. 1700, is the empire after these conquests. It is also the point at which the cost of the Deccan wars, above all against the Marathas, began to tell on the treasury and the army.
