Shah Jahan's tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, built over two decades on the Yamuna in white Makrana marble.

Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth at Burhanpur in 1631, and work on her tomb began in 1632. Shah Jahan held the twelfth anniversary of her death at the finished mausoleum on 6 February 1643, which Koch takes as its official completion; the gateway, mosque, guest house and outer courts took about ten years more.

The empire at its richest: white marble hauled from Makrana in Rajasthan, red sandstone from the Fatehpur Sikri quarries, and semi-precious stones from across Asia cut into the inlay.
